In Part 2 of this lesson we introduced the branch of Botany called Taxonomy, the classification and naming of plants. Unless you are a botanist, it is not necessary to know every Latin name that you come across. However, if after completing this lesson you find yourself paying a little more attention to the botanical names of herbs, then our goal will have been met. As time goes by, you will be surprised at how many you will pick up.
Does this mean that I am advocating the use of botanical names to the exclusion of common names? By no means! The common names are very useful, often descriptive, and at times even poetic. But there are times when it helps to know the botanical name of a plant to prevent confusion and to delineate exactly which plant we mean.
